Description:

Jenkins, who connected the Renaissance sense of beauty to Purcell's time, and the new recording of Renaissance music from the home of English music, continued to be loved by the public well into the 17th century, while courtly music was threatened with extinction during the Republican period of the Puritan Revolution at mid-century, and after the breakdown of art music, the English musical world experienced a rapid influx of Baroque music with the restoration of the monarchy in 1660. After the abortion of art music, the English musical world experienced a rapid influx of Baroque music with the restoration of the monarchy in 1660. As a result, a unique situation emerged in which polyphonic music with a pre-revolutionary Renaissance sense of beauty survived until the late 17th century and coexisted with new Baroque music. John Jenkins, a stringed instrument artist who survived the transitional period of the republican era and made a new career with the restoration of the monarchy, left behind not only innovative music using the violin, but also polyphonic instrumental music with beautiful Renaissance-style sound production by the viol (viola da gamba) ensemble. Phantasm, a group of leading British gamba players, has thoroughly researched the scores of Jenkins' viol consort works, created new revised scores, and made definitive recordings of the works. This album is a collection of works in four voices, and marks the conclusion of this systematic recording. Most of these works were written in the 1620s, before the Revolution, and unlike the William Rose Consort of the same period, Jenkins' style is unique in that it adheres to the conventions of strict counterpoint while keeping the listener interested with its unique harmony. The sound world of this work is distinctly different from the music of later years, which uses the violin. The 19 works are worth listening to, and the naturalistic recording by LINN RECORDS is a joy to listen to. Naxos Japan
