Description:
This is the fourth collection of Pärt's works for BR-KLASSIK by the Bavarian Radio Chorus. The album features one of their best-known works, "Stabat Mater," as well as works in compositional styles from the 1970s onward. "Stabat Mater," commissioned by the Alban Berg Foundation in 1985, was written with Latin lyrics for soprano, countertenor, tenor and cello, The work is for soprano, countertenor, tenor, violin, viola, and cello with Latin lyrics. The tintinnabuli (Latin for "bell") style of Pärt's works since 1976 is still present here. The truncated register, the lack of a definite time signature, and the unique construction of bar lines separated by word syllables convey the heart of the sorrow straight through, without sacrificing the flow of the text. The other five orchestral pieces in the collection are. The "Fratres (Brothers)" is from 1977. There are versions for various instruments, but here it is performed with a relatively large string orchestra and percussion. This one also uses the tintinabuli style of repeating a chant-like melody over sustained bass notes. The "Silouan Song" is from 1991." Subtitled "For the Mother Superior and the Faithful of the Eastern Church," the piece is consistently in quiet movement. La sindone" is from 2005. It is a mystical music with a solo violin part added in 2019, intended to be performed by violinist Vadim Repin. The "Summa" is from 1991. It has a style so complete that Pärt himself described it as "the most rigorous and enigmatic work." In Memory of Lennart" is from 2006. It is a deeply prayerful music composed for the funeral service of his friend Lennart Meri, who served as president of the Republic of Estonia from 1992 to 2001. Naxos Japan
