The "100 Years of British Song" series by James Gilchrist and Nathan Williamson, whose first collection (SOMMCD0621) was highly acclaimed. The previous collection featured works by Holst, Clarke, Gurney, and Bridge, and this second collection includes works by five composers. All of the songs are almost unheard of. The second collection includes "Farewell" by Olwyn, which shows the influence of late German Romanticism; "Two Romances on Verses by John Fletcher" by Rothsohn, which combines Elizabethan antiquity and humor; "Prison Romances" by Rothsohn and Busch on poems by German socialist playwright Ernst Toller; and "The Prison Songs," by Williamson, which is a collection of poems by the German playwright Ernst Toller. Williamson's "Three Donne Songs" by McConkie, a woman composer whom Williamson describes as "ambitious and infused with dramatic feeling," and seven songs by Olwyn's wife, Carwisen, whom Williamson also calls "a gem of true imagination and expressive power. Gilchrist and Williamson bring out the best of each song and deliver it to the listener.
