Description:
Stanford is a composer of Irish origin. However, he was active primarily in the British music world, teaching at Cambridge University and later becoming a professor at the newly established Royal College of Music. He is known for his achievements in educating Holst, Ierland, Vaughan Williams, Bridge, and others. While he established his reputation as an educator, his works were overshadowed by the masterpieces of his pupils, and his numerous chamber and religious works were neglected. Many of Stanford's works are mysterious and romantic, with elements of Irish folklore. His chamber works also show no small amount of Brahms' influence. This album includes the "Piano Quintet" from his mature period and two "Fantasias" written in his later years, which offer a taste of simple melodies reminiscent of the countryside. The members of the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra and Nikolaus Reza, who plays piano in the Berlin Piano Trio, form an intimate ensemble. Naxos Japan
