This album, a collection of piano music spanning 70 years by six Armenian composers, is a reflection of the development of ethnic, Islamic-style music in Armenia, which was under Ottoman rule from the 16th century through the early 20th century. The earliest preludes on the album, the Chebotarian Preludes, are particularly influenced by Turkish music, with characteristic rhythms and colorful harmonies. In the second half of the 20th century, however, avant-garde elements began to merge, as can be seen in Mirzoian's "Poem" written in 1971 and Mansourian's "Three Pieces," written almost entirely in atonal form, which shows the trend of the times. The Armenian pianist Hans Hunt is a native of Armenia. The Armenian pianist Haik Melikan's sympathetic performance of these works is sure to be a treat for the ears. Naxos Japan
