This 2-CD set contains all of Janacek's solo piano works and chamber music with piano. Of the two works with chamber ensembles, "Concertino" was written in 1925 and was actually his first piano concerto. The 1926 Capriccio "Challenge" is a concerto for the left hand, written for Otakar Holman, a pianist who lost his right hand in the war. The piano sings a mumbled melody in between the ensembles, and the ostinato (the same pattern repeated relentlessly) is often used, which is typical of Janacek in his later years. Jan Ilasky, born in 1973, has been a fan of Janacek since his student days, and studied Janacek's works at university, earning a doctorate. After recording this album, he became the youngest professor of piano at the Janacek Music Academy in 2007. Naxos Japan
