The master of the German Baroque, Westhoff was considered one of the most important violinists active in Dresden at the time, and gained fame through his tours around Europe. A generation older than the great Bach, these suites (partitas) by Westhoff are considered the most notable examples of pre-Bach music in that they incorporate a great deal of polyphonic technique using only one violin. The works here are mainly from a collection published in Dresden in 1696, but one piece (9-13) was published in Paris in 1683, the year Louis XIV praised him for his performance at the Palace of Versailles, and is a testament to his reputation at the time. The performance was given by Nikitasova, a violinist whose repertoire focuses on German works from the Baroque to the Classical period. As is typical of a virtuoso violinist, Nikitasova sings these works not only with great skill, but also with fluidity and beauty. Naxos Japan
