Description:

Sverink is one of the leading composers of the early 17th century in the Netherlands, along with recorder composer Jacob van Eyck. Sverink was active as an organist of the Old Church in Amsterdam, and nurtured many excellent students, including Scheidemann, J. Praetorius, and Scheidt, who contributed greatly to the development of organ art in northern Germany. Like his Italian contemporary Frescobaldi, he left many works suitable for harpsichord as well as organ, but today there are not many opportunities to hear them all together, except for a few works in manuscripts in other countries. Richard Eger, who has recorded many works by the great composers of the 17th and 18th centuries as harpsichordist and organist while serving as music director of the Academy of Ancient Music after its founder, Hogwood, has now recorded Sverink's keyboard works on harpsichord. Eger has recorded many works by the great composers of the 17th and 18th centuries as a harpsichordist and organist, and his recording of the keyboard works of Sverink is a welcome addition. The instrument used is a model from the Rückers (Lukkers) workshop, the most important keyboard instrument maker in the Dutch-speaking world during Sverink's lifetime. The instrument is an exquisite reproduction by Katzman, a Dutch-American trusted by many of the world's greatest players, and the "sounds of the time" brought back to life through Eger's careful interpretation can be described as the world of Dutch Golden Age chamber genre painting itself.
