Walter Wilson Cobbett (1847-1937) was a major contributor to the development of chamber music in England in the first half of the 20th century. Although Cobbett was a highly successful businessman, he was also an amateur violinist, playing chamber music on weekends with friends and serving as concert master of an amateur orchestra, and his heart was always with music. In 1905, Cobbett organized the first "Chamber Music Competition" to motivate young composers (Frank Bridge won a special prize in the first competition), and he provided excellent aftercare by commissioning new works from the composers who won the competition at a later date. This album is an attempt to follow in the footsteps of the venerable "Cobbett Prize" by selecting outstanding works from the contemporary repertoire. Among the works is "Purcell's Flower Crown," a contemporary arrangement by three composers (Nassen, Benjamin, and Matthews) of a work by Henry Purcell, a strong influence on the young Cobbett, creating a unique album in the tradition of English chamber music.
