Ivan Lepsic succeeds Ulf Schirmer as chief conductor of the Munich Radio Orchestra. This time, he tackled a collection of overtures by Sappe, a composer known for his "Light Cavalry" overture and "The Poet and the Farmer," and brought out a new charm in them. Born into an aristocratic family of Belgian descent, Suppé first studied flute, but when he heard Offenbach's operettas, which were popular at the time, he was so taken by their joy that he began composing his own operettas. Many of his operettas are vigorously orchestrated, and his lively tunes and familiar melodies, such as the aria from "Boccaccio," are well-loved, but only a few of them are often heard, and the complete operas are rarely heard. However, just by listening to the various overtures recorded here, you will understand the charm of his works.
