Until Dawn, the long-awaited new album from Manchester-based producer Mecca:83, is now available on vinyl. The 12 tracks, which encompass his roots in jazz, soul, and golden era boom-bap, but with a contemporary texture, present a dramatic, deep hip-hop journey. The first cut, "Don't Stop," features Detroit heavyweights Phat Kat & Guilty Simpson dropping a mighty verse, while UK turntablist Jabba Tha Kut's sharp scratching adds intensity to the track. The boombop style sound is reminiscent of the golden era of the 90s, and is one of the songs that evokes the core of Mecca:83's origins. Other guest artists include the futuristic jazz hip-hop "Elevation" with jazz keyboardist Jonny Tobin, "Proof of Life" with New York poetic lyricist Nardo Says, the mellow soul "Sober" with Ella Mae Sueref, whose sensitive voice is deeply moving, and "Midnight Run" with Lex (de Kalhex), who is known as a member of the French group Kalhex. The mellow soul of "Sober" with Ella Mae Sueref, and "Midnight Run" with Lex (de Kalhex), a member of the French group Kalhex, are just a few of the diverse guests who add color to each song. Produced, mixed, and arranged entirely by Mecca:83, the entire album is wrapped in a warm texture and craftsmanship that resides in every detail. Live elements such as Luman Child's bass ("Silent Arrival"), Donald Malloy's trumpet ("Sober"), and Markita on Flute's flute ("The Light Inside") are also incorporated throughout the album to create a deep groove. The groove is deep and rich. The artwork was drawn by Joel van der Knaap (Roam Comics), who has garnered attention for his graphic novel aesthetic. The label is rockwell product shop, which also released the "Let's Get It" 7" featuring InI member Grap Luva and "Life Sketches Vol. 3" featuring the same song in 2017. The sound image is profound and resonates with analog listeners, and the melody and words quietly shake the heart. At the intersection of hip-hop and jazz, Mecca:83 has created a soundtrack for the future.
