Dusty Springfield, the queen of British blue-eyed soul, released her fifth studio album "Dusty in Memphis" in the U.S. in 1969 after signing with Atlantic Records, the label of Aretha Franklin, whom she admired, and it was released worldwide on It was released on Phillips Records. Produced by Jerry Wexler, Arif Mardin, and Tom Dowd, the album was recorded at American Sound Studios in Memphis, and the sessions there included Reggie Young (guitar), who has backed many soul musicians, Tommy Cogbill (bass (bass), and Sweet Inspirations (backing vocals), who have backed many soul musicians on the sessions there. Their unique skills have transformed a pop selection into a sophisticated and soulful sound. Although this album did not sell well when it was first released, it was the first album by a female pop singer recorded in the southern United States, and it was a precursor to Dionne Warwick's "Soulful," Petula Clark's "Memphis," and Lulu's "New Routes," and the elegant fusion of pop and R&B that this album demonstrated had a major influence on later singers such as Adele, Amy Winehouse, Duffy, and Rumer, and its reputation is now history.
