Townes Van Zandt

Description:

A special edition featuring a paper sleeve and obi note, released by the Taiwan-based reissue label “ONCEMOREMUSIC.” Townes Van Zandt, a legendary artist from Texas who was known as the “songwriter’s songwriter” and had a profound influence on artists such as Bob Dylan. This release is a collection of recordings of high archival value, combining his 1968 debut album *For the Sake of the Song*, which documents the dawn of his career, and his third album from 1969, *Townes Van Zandt*, onto a single disc. His songs are constructed with intricate rhythms influenced by the blues of Lightning Hopkins and the poetry of Robert Frost. The collection features a diverse range of styles, including “Waitin’ Around to Die”—the first serious song he wrote—as well as “Lungs,” which depicts the life of a miner; the tragic “Tecumseh Valley”; and the talking blues-style “Talkin’ Karate Blues,” with his exceptional fingerpicking evident throughout. The most notable feature is the ability to directly compare the evolution of arrangements and recording contexts for the same songs. His debut album, recorded in Nashville and produced by Jack Clement and others, features a rich chamber-folk approach that makes heavy use of strings and harpsichord. However, he did not care for this overproduced sound and re-recorded four songs—including “Waitin’ Around to Die”—for his third album the following year. The re-recordings eliminated percussion and shifted to a minimalist arrangement centered on acoustic guitar, violin, and flute. With a mix that brings the vocals and guitar to the forefront, it clearly signaled a return to the intended acoustic soundscape. An essential album that captures the transitional period of the “singer-songwriter” concept in the late 1960s. Import edition distributed in Japan with obi notes / Liner notes: All Days Editorial Department.
