Abdullah Ibrahim, South Africa's world-renowned master of jazz piano, presents his long-awaited new album! The new album "3", recorded at a sold-out concert at the Barbican Centre in London, Europe's largest cultural institution, consists of two different performances. The first is a direct analog recording of a performance made at a venue with no audience before the concert began, and the second is a recording of the actual concert. The former was recorded using the same equipment used by Elvis Presley at the famous Sun Studio in Memphis. Abdullah on this occasion was a three-piece band, featuring Cleve Guyton (flute/piccolo/saxophone), who has played with Aretha Franklin, Joe Henderson, and Dizzy Gillespie, and Noah Jackson, bassist and cellist. Both members are members of Ekaya, the band with which Abdullah performed on his previous album, "The Balance," which reached No. 3 on the Billboard Jazz Charts.The songs on the album range from new compositions to jazz classics with arrangements that reflect the gospel, American jazz, and jive influences that Abdullah grew up listening to in his childhood. Abdullah's friends and heroes include Duke Ellington and John Coltrane. The album also features Abdullah's captivating vocal performance. It is a heartbreaking song about the pain of slavery, sung in both indigenous languages and English, creating powerful and haunting moments. The absence of percussion throughout the piece highlights both the more poignant and energetic moments.
