LP / 180g The first album by Village of the Sun, a hot jazz/electro crossover unit by Simon Ratcliffe of Basement Jaxx! Village of the Sun is a unique collaborative unit that suddenly released two singles in 2020, attracting attention among early listeners here in Japan. This September, they released their first new song in two and a half years, "Tigris," which has been the talk of the town, and will release their first album, "First Light," in November. Simon Ratcliffe, who has won numerous honors including a Grammy as Basement Jaxx, one of the UK's leading dance units, has teamed up with saxophonist Binker Golding and drummer Moses Boyd, two of the leading figures of the new generation in the UK jazz scene, to create a remarkable jazz/dance crossover unit. They recently released "Tigris" after more than two years of silence, a song that seamlessly blends jazz and electro influences in a way that is typical of them, with an exquisite mix of piano, saxophone, and drums. Another song from the album, "The Spanish Master," is the very embodiment of Village of the Sun's roots, combining moody synth lines and percussive electro with Moses' intricate drums and Binker's expressive saxophone. The song is a perfect example of the energetic and adrenaline-fueled performance of the three musicians. Another track, "Cesca," highlights Simon's ability to manipulate key and electronic fluctuations, allowing him to instantly change the mood and direction of a song. The title track, "First Light," on the other hand, is infused with Simon's sense of tension and release, leading to the sound of the current UK jazz scene, complete with semi-free saxophone lines and uncompromising drums and mature electronic sounds.
