The Tchaikovsky series produced by Kultura, a Russian TV station, Vol. 3 features Temirkanov and the St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra performing "Pathetique" and "Variations on a Rococo Theme" live at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées in Paris on December 5, 2007. This disc is a live concert of "Pathetique" and "Variations on a Rococo Theme" by Temirkanov and the St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra. Variations on a Rococo Theme" is a cello piece, but the popular trumpet player Sergei Nakariakov gives a brilliant performance of his father Mikhail's arrangement for flugelhorn. Nakariakov's skill and clear beauty of sound are as always, and it is a pleasure for fans to be able to see them on film. Since there have been so many performances of Temirkanov's "Pathetique," one might get the impression that there are many discs available, but in fact the only one available is the 1992 RCA disc with the St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra.After 15 years, the new recording is even more Temirkanov-esque, with a softer world without harshness or despair.
