The seventh in the series of Tabakov's complete recordings of Shostakovich symphonies! The rugged yet strongly compelling No. 10! This is the seventh in a series of recordings of the complete Shostakovich symphonies, the life's work of the famous Bulgarian conductor Emil Tabakov. Nos. 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 11, and 13 have already been released, and Vol. 5 (No. 13) and Vol. 6 (Nos. 5 and 6) were selected as semi-selected recordings in the monthly review by Record Geijutsu magazine. This time, at the turn of the series, we will feature Nos. 9 and 10, which stand like statues on either side of the entrance to Shostakovich's late creative period. As usual, the two works are not at all flirtatious to the listener, but rather show a strong will like that of a rugged and stubborn craftsman. The contrast between the light and introspective movement of No. 9, which was subjected to the famous Zidanov criticism, is presented as a conflict in the composer's mind, as if it were armor secretly worn under his robe.The 10th Symphony is Shostakovich's masterpiece and is highly acclaimed as such. The performance is a sharp contrast to the usual jangly, jagged, and in the best sense of the word (?) local performance by Tabakov and the Bulgarian National Radio Symphony Orchestra, which takes the listener deep into the composer's anguished and lonely heart. As in the past, the recording is a session recording made in a studio. This is a masterful performance that can be considered a confession of faith in Shostakovich by Tabakov, who is also a composer.
