Description:

The great works of Akira Ifukube and Koichi Kishi, two of the greatest treasures of Japanese composition, are brought back to life in a miraculous live recording! The overwhelming performance by the Tokyo City Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Yukio Fujioka brought them into the limelight. Akira Ifukube's "Symphonic Chorus '釋迦'" & Koichi Kishi's "Symphony '仏陀'" are now available on long-awaited live CD! Three Shells is pleased to announce the release of the live recording of these two works by the Tokyo City Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Yukio Fujioka. Akira Ifukube (1914-2006), one of Japan's leading composers, recomposed and reworked this magnificent orchestral work with chorus, "釋迦", based on his own ballet and film music. The primitive and spellbinding rhythms and solemn sounds of prayer unique to Ifukube vividly depict the life of Sakyamuni Buddha. Symphony "Buddha" (1934) was completed by the genius Kishi Koichi (1911-1937), who died young, for his first performance with the Berlin Philharmonic. With the fertile orchestral style of Mahler, Bruckner, Wagner, Richard Strauss, and other late Romantic composers, the Buddha's suffering, love, hell, and nirvana are expressed in this profound 42-minute symphony. These two works are masterpieces that have been reevaluated in recent years as milestones in Japanese composition. Yukio Fujioka (Principal Guest Conductor of the Tokyo City Philharmonic Orchestra) gave soul-stirring performances at the Tokyo Opera City Concert Hall on February 14, 2025 and at the Sumida Trifony Hall on February 20, 2025 as the centerpiece of the program he has been developing for many years. This high-quality live recording, which captures the passion and excitement of those performances as they were, has finally been completed on CD. This is a must-listen disc that touches the origin and depths of Japanese composers. For classical music fans, Ifukube fans, and all those who are waiting for the rediscovery of Koichi Kishi.
