The fusion of traditional gamelan/gong and contemporary strings is inspired by the sound of Steve Reich and the ECM label, the film "Akira" and the Japanese landscape. The multi-instrumentalist Pascal Bidault, who combines gamelan and gong with electronica and jazz, created this work after immersing himself in traditional gamelan and gong music during a visit to Indonesia. Many of the themes, motifs, and melodies are based on the "slendro" scale, one of the most important tunings used in gamelan, with simple saxophone lines, synths, brass, and strings gradually shifting to create a unique cosmic worldview. The album's centrepiece, 'Neo Tokyo', was inspired by Katsuhiro Otomo's 'Akira' and evokes a dizzying work of art set in a vast future metropolis.Yurikamome" is an imaginary soundtrack inspired by a Youtube video of Bidot driving through Japanese landscapes and cities. The album features Daniel Brandt, Brandt Brauer Frick (drums/electronic percussion), Florian Juncker (trombone), and Ruth Velten (saxophone).
