Spiritual music played through piano, organ and harmonium by beloved composer and Ethiopian nun Emahoy Tsege Mariam Gebru This work explores an approach to "Ethiopian church music" that includes two previously unreleased piano recordings from an album she independently produced in 1972. Ave Maria" is one of the most impressive of her recordings, with clear piano tones echoing off the old stone walls. In "Spring Ode - Meskerem," her familiar melodies take on a new resonance through the harmonium. Also included are two magnificent organ pieces that combine her training in European classical music with years of study of Ethiopian religious music. Of the two, "Essay on Mahlet" is the most outstanding piece, expressing the spirit of free verse in the Ethiopian Orthodox liturgy, note by note, on the piano, blending it with her unique sensibility. Both pieces are from the album Der Sang Des Meeres, which was independently produced in 1963.The jacket features metallic silver foil stamping and includes a 12-page booklet with liner notes by scholar and pianist Thomas Fenn. It will be released on her 102nd birthday.
