La Luz, a psychedelic/surf-rock band from California, U.S.A., has completed a new album. La Luz, led by Shana Cleveland, releases News of the Universe, their first new album for Sub Pop and their fifth album with Mariam Kudus (Space Moth) on production. With a title taken from science fiction author Octavia E. Butler, the album expresses an expansion of consciousness brought on by a personal crisis, in which guitarist and songwriter Cleveland embraces a changing world with unconditional love. The News of the Universe News of the Universe is also a record born of disaster, a dark and beautiful piece of psychedelia that reflects Cleveland's experience with a breast cancer diagnosis just two years after the birth of her son.The powerful openness that pervades the album is brought about by the fact that it was produced entirely by women, from playing, writing, and producing to recording, engineering, and mastering.
