Latvian-German smoldering cellist Ulis Teichmanis plays the Bach Unaccompanied Suites! No. 6 is played on a 5-string piccolo cello. German cellist Ulis Teichmanis, described by Gramophone magazine as "a smoldering, sensual obbligato", plays Bach's sacred "Suite for Unaccompanied Cello"! He studied in Freiburg with Atis Teichmanis and Christoph Henkel, and in Karlsruhe with Martin Ostertag, Heinrich Schiff, and Franco Rossi (Italian String Quartet). He also studied with Anner Bylsma in Amsterdam. He has performed in a wide range of fields from historical performances to contemporary works, and has appeared at music festivals throughout Germany. He has taught with the Junge Deutsche Philharmonie and the Baden-Württemberg Youth Baroque Orchestra, and is artistic director of the "BACH PUR" Music Festival in Freiburg. Dedicated to the memory of his teacher Anner Bylsma, Ulis Teichmanis' Bach recordings present vivid colors and unique interpretations created by the choice of two historical instruments with 400 Hz pitch and gut strings in a raw, realistic and excellent recording.
