The best performance that Abbado reached in his last years of Bruckner with the Lucerne Festival Orchestra, which he devoted his last years of life to! He became Music Director of the Lucerne Festival Orchestra in 2003. The orchestra is based on the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, which was formed by a group of world-class musicians who admire Abbado. CD 1 features the Bruckner Symphony No. 1, performed at the 2012 festival, and CD 2 features the Bruckner Symphony No. 3, performed by the Lucerne Festival Orchestra. Bruckner's symphonies are complicated by edition issues, and this first symphony can be divided into two major versions: the Linz manuscript and the Vienna manuscript. The Vienna manuscript was revised by the composer himself 25 years after its composition (after the second draft of No. 8), and the sound of the Vienna manuscript is more reminiscent of late Romanticism than of his early works. Abbado prefers this rarely performed Bruckner symphony No. 1 to his other symphonies.In previous recordings, the Linz manuscript has been used mainly, but this time the Vienna manuscript is used. The Vienna version of Bruckner's First Symphony has been performed by Wand & Cologne Radio Symphony Orchestra and Chailly & Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra, but this performance by Abbado & Lucerne Festival Orchestra retains the lively atmosphere of the early Bruckner, while the refined orchestration of the later Bruckner can be appreciated more. The CD2 includes a performance of the Vienna manuscript, which is already available on the DGR CD. CD 2 contains the Symphony No. 9, which has already been released on the DG label. This recording was made live by AccentusMusic. Abbado's health has not been good since that time, and his scheduled visit to Japan with the Lucerne Festival Orchestra was cancelled immediately afterwards. He was scheduled to perform No. 9 during his visit to Japan, but he died in January of the following year without making it to Japan. Against this background, the orchestra members who adored Abbado played with all their hearts, and Abbado himself seemed to have reached the height of his music, giving a sublime and compassionate performance.
