Xu XiaomeiFinally Re-recording the GoltsbergA Chinese pianist based in Europe, Xu Xiaomei has overcome the Cultural Revolution to forge a new path. She has overcome the Cultural Revolution and paved a new path. Her music is peaceful, which one would never imagine from such a half life. Her Bach performances, which are her forte, are produced from her precise compositional skills and refined expressiveness, and the music is pure and resonant to the listener's heart. She has re-recorded for the first time in 25 years the work that has become synonymous with her, the Goltberg Variations, and while a live recording from the 2014 Leipzig Bach Festival (ACC20313) has been released, Xu Xiaomei's Goltberg Variations are not as well-known as her 1990 recording, which won five stars from the French Diapason magazine, and was also released in the same year. The Goltberg Variations by Xu Xiaomei reminds me of the famous disc (MIR048) recorded in 1990 and awarded five stars by the French Diapason magazine.Recorded 25 years later, this CD also shows a deep understanding of Bach's music and a piano sound played with remarkable transparency, making it one of the most appealing performances of the Golberg Variations among the many available. Xu Xiaomei, in recording this piece, cites the words of Lao Tzu, "The Return is the Movement of Tao," as an example of how he sees the Golberg Variations, which begin and end with an aria, as a cycle of life and death, and says that he wants the performance to leave the listener with a sense of hope for "life" after listening to the piece. He says that he wants to give a performance in which the audience can feel the hope for "life" after listening to the piece. King International Inc.
