The great dancer & choreographer John Neumeier. Here comes one of his most famous works, "The Matthew Passion". This work was premiered in November 1980 at St. Michaelis Church, the same church where the current production is being performed, to great acclaim. I am both a dancer and a Christian," says Neumeier, "and this is a quiet confession to God. This is his own world, while at the same time being close to the music of J.S.Bach (1685-1750). The stage is set with several black benches, and the 41 dancers, all dressed in simple white costumes, either dance at the front of the stage or wait at the back. They are all individually willed and their dancing is unique (most of the choreography is left to the individual). The contrast between black and white is beautiful, as is the beauty of the physicality in the group dances. The divinity of Christ, played by Neumeier himself. Even a simple white shirt becomes a "holy robe" here. By switching camera angles, you can view the performance from two different perspectives (overhead and close-up). Naxos Japan
