The third collection of Werner's works by the virtuoso group La Festa Musicale is "Mass and Motets". Gregor Joseph Werner (1693-1766), born in Austria, was a composer who contributed to the birth of the Viennese Classical School, becoming the court music director of the Esterházy family in 1728, a position he held for the rest of his life (Haydn became the court music director after Werner's death). Werner is known as a prolific composer, but most of his works are vocal pieces related to church music. Werner's music, which can be called the art of pre-Haydn counterpoint, is superb. The dramatic melodies are fascinating. The two choruses of the Mass are sung by four solo singers and the eight-member vocal ensemble "Voctetto Hannover. Lajos Lovatkai, the conductor of this ensemble, has been studying Werner's works for a long time, and this recording was made just in time.
