A collection of English Renaissance vocal music by Benno Schachtner, an up-and-coming countertenor with a clear voice, featuring many sublime works by Purcell, Hume, Dowland, Croft, Blow, and Johnson. The collection includes works by Purcell, Hume, Dowland, Croft, Blow, and Johnson, all English composers from the last flourishing period of Renaissance music, which had already begun to decline in Europe. Benno Schachtner is one of today's most promising countertenor singers. He is well known for his work in the German Baroque, and his English Renaissance music is a must-see. The vocal pieces on this CD are mainly about love, and are arranged according to the lyrics, from first love, through courtship, to despair, to prayer.The program also includes a solo piece by Hume, who also played the viol, Dowland's "Tearful Pavane" for lute solo, which is still widely performed today, and a harpsichord solo in the form of "ground," in which the same motif is repeated over and over again.
