Description:
Another remarkable recording from the Salzburg Festival archives: The fabulous Macbeth of 1964 by Fischer-Dieskau, Bumbry, and Sawallisch. Starting with "Falstaff," he conducted "Don Carlo," "Il Trovatore," "Otello," and "Aida" himself with great success. The production is still talked about to this day. First of all, it should be noted that the 40-year-old Sawallisch conducted the production. His youthful and fiery performance is overwhelmingly different from the orthodox, grand-established performances of later years. In this production, the prelude is cut off and the production begins with a tense witch scene, but the passionate conducting fits perfectly with this direction, and one cannot take one's ears off the music from beginning to end. The scene in which Macbeth sees the ghost of Banquo at the feast (Act II), coupled with Fischer-Dieskau's true-to-life singing, is one of the most powerful I have ever heard! On the other hand, the detailed characterization of Macbeth and his wife is also very skillful, reminding us once again of the great talent of Sawallisch. As for the singers, Fischer-Dieskau and Bumbry both play Macbeth and his wife with "bright" voices, which is a major feature of this production. In Fischer-Dieskau's Macbeth, the tragedy of his fall is even more pronounced, reminding us that he was once a hero who was respected by all. Bambury's reputation as the "Black Venus" is the same as when she sang "Tannhäuser" at Bayreuth at the same time (1962), also under the direction of Sawallisch. This beautiful and supple interpretation of Lady Macbeth, which is a far cry from the image of Lady Macbeth, whose ugliness is often emphasized, is a very convincing response to Shakespeare's riddle in the original play that "clean is dirty and dirty is clean". The recording, though in mono, is excellent, capturing the theatrical excitement well. It is an explosive performance that should not be missed! King International
