The Amadeus Quartet was formed in 1947, and at its peak from the 1950s to the 1970s, it was one of the world's leading ensembles in the U.K. The 1977 live performance at the Schwetzingen Festival is a very interesting program for those who know the ensemble. Britten's Third Quartet was given its world premiere by none other than Amadeus some six months prior to this live performance, and in September 1976 the members of Amadeus collaborated with Britten in preparation for the world premiere at the Maltings, Snape, near Oldborough, on December 19, 1976. (Britten himself did not say anything about it for two weeks. (Britten himself had passed away two weeks earlier and was unable to be present for the premiere.)The second is Schubert's "Death and the Maiden," which was recorded live in Cologne in February 1956 (AN2160) and three session recordings, including one in 1959. The performance here is also worthy of being the highlight of the program. King International
