A kaleidoscope of sound spun by Cage and Otte The ultimate "Zen" world that returns to silence The music on this CD is almost the same as that originally performed at a concert held for Hans Otte's 80th birthday. The Gospel of John transcribes, "In the beginning was the Word." In music, at least, it is the "sound" that is in the beginning. The concert was organized based on the idea that music with words attached to it exists, but they are merely repetitions of the content of the music, and that any music that does not make some kind of sense solely through sound itself is incomplete. The sounds, naturally blending into the silence, evoked for us both Western and Eastern backgrounds. Otte's "Book of Echoes" is hypnotic minimal music.The beautiful sounds are repeated endlessly, and the accents and harmonies change little by little. This is a new trend in Western music. Toki no Hon" is a work written in "atonal" style, which is a departure from the tonality that is the foundation of Western music, and contains a bit of Zen atmosphere. It is a combination of the world of Zen and the world of one of the ultimate evolutions of Western music. Cage's sonatas, many of which are written for prepared piano, have a magical element, like gamelan music.
