Late Romantic symphonic oratorio Philip Wolfram's "Mysteries of Christmas"! Philipp Wolfram (1854-1919) was one of the most influential figures in German music around 1900. He was choir director, organist, composer, professor, and university music director in Heidelberg, where he was friends with Humperdinck, Reger, and R. Strauss, and maintained close ties with the Bayreuth Circle, led by Wagner's widow Cosima. Liszt and Wagner were his great idols, and this is evident in his compositions. Wolfram's masterpiece, "Weihnachtsmysterium" (The Christmas Mysteries), premiered in 1898, is a symphonic oratorio in which the birth of Jesus is staged in a pictorial manner.The conception of this over one and a half hour work is influenced by medieval mystery plays and Wagner's comprehensive art, and the musical material consists of famous German Christmas carols, treated with high chromatic harmony, late Romantic melodies, and colorful orchestral playing, reminiscent of Wagner's operas, Liszt's symphonic poems, and in places reminiscent of Brahms, Humperdinck, and Reger.
