Description:

The latest work by Moroccan-born pianist Jean-Marie Machado. Jean-Marie Machado's music is a hybridization of intertwining cultures and languages, untroubled by national borders. The album "Majakka" (Finnish for lighthouse) contains a variety of pieces that have brought a special color to his musical journey. It is inspired by his cultural heritage, encounters, and prolific career as a composer. Fragments of his life and music that guide him like the light of a lighthouse.... He says, "For the first time I felt compelled to look back and listen to my old records. Certain colors came out and I saw them coming into their own, and it's a light that was imposed on me. I had to accept what happened in spite of myself," commented Machado." "Bolinha," "Um vento leve," and "Emocao de alegria" are from the project "La main des saisons," based on the work of poet Fernando Pessoa, and "Les yeux de Tangati" is from the three albums Machado recorded with "Les yeux de Tangati" was written for a duet with the great New York saxophonist Dave Liebman, with whom Machado has recorded three albums together." Gallop Impulse" is from the album Impulse Songs (Label Hortus, 2018), on which we have already heard Keevan Khemirani's Zarb, who reunited with Machado on this album.During the recording of the album, which took place last September in a studio in La Buissonne, Machado composed the original songs "Les pierres noires," "La mer des pluies," and "Outra Terra" on the spot for the quartet, under apparently chaotic circumstances. They were written to testify both to the changes in their personal lives and to the profound changes in our common concern, the earth. The melody, the sound, the tone, the rhythm, the title evocative of the work: .... All are rich and generous. The work is poetic, chiseled, sometimes delicately rounded, sometimes feverish. [Personnel] Jean-Marie Machado (p) Keyvan Chemirani (zarb, per) Jean-Charles Richard (bs,ss,fl) Vincent Segal (cello)
