Pizzetti and Montemessi, members of the famous “Generation of 1880” in Italian musical history, alongside Respighi, Casella, and Malipiero. This album features the world premiere recording of orchestral works by Mario Pilati (1903–1938), who passed away at the young age of 35, arranged for four-hand piano by Pizzetti and Montemessi. Pizzetti’s Symphonic Prelude to *Oedipus Rex* is characterized by ancient modes and a refined, Debussy-esque sound. Meanwhile, Montemezzi’s *Paolo and Virginia* is an emotionally rich masterpiece that fuses traditional Italian lyricism with Wagnerian orchestration.
