Legendary singer Salif Keita makes a spectacular return with the acoustic and very intimate album "So Kono". The "golden voice of Africa" Salif Keita reconnects with his roots and his longtime guitar partner in a simple acoustic format. I play guitar when I compose, but I am not a guitarist," he says, and the idea of an acoustic album had long been dismissed by the artist himself. Something changed with the KYOTOPHONIE Borderless Music Festival, realized in 2023, organized by photographer Lucille Reyboz and encouraged by producer Laurent Bizot (Nø Førmat!), in Kyoto, Japan. Surrounded by the spirituality of a Zen temple and supported by loyal musicians (Badier Tuncara on ngoni and Mamadou Kone on percussion), Salif exposed himself like never before. Many of the songs were recorded in a hotel room in Kyoto, Japan, with the exception of "So Kono," which means "in the room" in Mandinka (a few songs were recorded in a hotel room in Kyoto, Japan).The title "Salif Keita" reflects both the simplicity and depth of this album and captures the essence of Salif Keita. It is a powerful voice, shaped by trials and journeys and enhanced by minimalist arrangements. Blending rethought classics with new compositions, the album resonates as a sincere and timeless work, reaffirming why Salif Keita is considered one of the greatest living singers of our time.
