Description:

Vivaldi: Vivaldi [Contents Opera "Alcilda, Queen of Ponto" RV 700 [3 acts]. Script by Domenico Lalli, premiered at the Teatro Sant'Angelo, Venice, October 1716. Performers. Andrea Marcon, conductor La Chetra Baroque Orchestra, Basel Vocal Ensemble Benedetta Mazzucato (Mezzo-soprano/Alsilda) Vasilisa Berchanskaya(Mezzo-soprano/Licea) Nicolo Balducci(Sopranista(Countertenor)/Balzane) Marie Liss(Soprano/Milinda) Leonardo Cortellazzi(Tenor/Tamese) Sheila Pacholnko(Soprano/Nicandro) Jose Coca Rosa(Bass/Cisardo) Recorded: June 8-12, 2024, Switzerland From the Vivaldi Edition comes the opera "Alcilda". Complex human relationships, prison scenes, royal hunts, sexual assaults, fights, and numerous pseudo-official ceremonies are just a few of the situations that stimulate Vivaldi's insatiable imagination.Vivaldi's music, with all of his creativity, has been brought back to life in the modern age by Malcon's lively and fluid conducting! Alcilda was created in October 1716 at the Teatro Sant'Angelo in Venice. Alcilda, queen of an ancient region in northern Anatolia, is betrothed to Prince Tamese, the newly crowned king of neighboring Cilicia. Balzane, king of Lydia, another neighbor, falls in love with Alcilda but is secretly betrothed to Lisea, Tammese's twin sister... The rather complex story has seven different roles, all equally important, and is full of masked balls, disguises, and identity games. The music is full of masquerade disguises and identity games. Although some of the arias are identical to those in the immediately preceding "Eudita triumphanti," the rest of the work consists of entirely new music. Perhaps the most impressive scene is Vivaldi's Balzane aria in Act II, Scene 9, in which he recreates the nightingale's voice (violin) and the cuckoo's voice (viola) with chromatic ascending eighth-note repetitions of the birds' little steps. The entire sixth scene of Act II is also tremendously inventive, an amazing series of almost cinematic snapshots.
