Description:
One of Haydn’s greatest masterpieces: The oratorio version of *The Seven Last Words of Christ on the Cross*, performed by the RIAS Berlin Chamber Choir, one of the world’s finest vocal ensembles! In 1786, Haydn composed *The Seven Last Words of Christ* for orchestra. Commissioned for a special Good Friday service at the Church of Santa Cueva in Cádiz, Andalusia, Spain, it featured a unique liturgical format: after each of the “Seven Last Words of Christ on the Cross” was recited, the bishop would walk back and forth between the altar and the pulpit to deliver a sermon, with music filling the intervals. This music is filled with intense tension and spread throughout Europe from the time of its creation as one of Haydn’s finest masterpieces; it even inspired a string quartet version by Haydn himself, as well as a piano version for which he gave his approval. In 1794, Haydn heard an arrangement of this work for voice and orchestra by Joseph Freybert, the court Kapellmeister of Passau, accompanied by religious poetry believed to have been composed by Freybert himself. Deeply inspired by this, Haydn set to work on creating his own vocal version (oratorio version). Initially, he drew on the Freybert version, but he gradually developed his own distinct vision, leading him to revise the orchestration and structure. He added two clarinets and two trombones, removed two of the original four horns, and made partial revisions to the notation and dynamics. Furthermore, for the six sonatas (excluding the Fifth), he composed new four-part chorale-like sections featuring the words of Jesus. Furthermore, a new “Second Introduction” was added between the Fourth and Fifth Words. This movement, composed solely for woodwinds, serves to clearly divide the entire work into two distinct parts; it also marks the first appearance of the contrabassoon in a Haydn composition. The newly reborn oratorio version was premiered on March 26, 1796, at the Schwarzenberg Palace in Vienna, conducted by Haydn himself. Following this success, the oratorio version of *The Seven Last Words* became a staple of the Lenten season in Vienna. Two years later, *The Creation* would be premiered at the same venue. Conducted by Justin Doyle, the RIAS Chamber Choir Berlin and the Berlin Konzerthaus Orchestra, together with four outstanding soloists, fully bring out the dramatic power, rich expressive depth, and liturgical fervor hidden within the work.
