A delightful sound world woven by viola da gamba and accordion! Les inattendus" means "unexpected people" in French. Here is the first appearance of 17th century English music with the accordion and viola da gamba, a rather unexpected combination. Although the accordion was conceived and manufactured as far back as the 19th century, it did not come into full production until after World War II, and in the last decade or so of the 20th century, more than 1,000 new compositions were written for the accordion. The accordion is an instrument that can replace the organ, and Lerme has already recorded a work by Rameau. Here we have an even older work from the 16th century, but the accordion is an instrument that can also substitute for the organ. It is no wonder that the accordion has an affinity with the work and with the viola da gamba, as can be heard here.The accordion sometimes sounds like an organ, sometimes like a regal, and the viola da gamba sometimes plays a melodic role, sometimes a bass-like role, as if it is flying freely.
