Description:

HMF's 100th anniversary series of Debussy's death, a collection of his most colorful songs! This series commemorates the 100th anniversary of Debussy's death. The beautiful melodies in French and the beautiful piano that envelops them are irresistible. The songs are by poets of the Symbolist and Impressionist schools. Debussy wrote about 100 songs during his lifetime, but only about half of them were published during his lifetime. The ones that remain unpublished were written between 1880 and 1885, when he was a student at the Conservatory of Music, which suggests that the song form played a very important role in shaping Debussy's style. The songs on this disc include texts by Banville and Verlaine, to whom Debussy was devoted from his youth, as well as those by Bourget, Baudelaire, and Ispa, a singer, actor, and comedian who was also a multi-talented artist. The melodies, pieced together in the beautiful French of Kartheuser (soprano) and Dugoux (baritone), make it difficult to tell whether the music is a narrative or a song. The piano, which beautifully envelops these beautiful voices, is also extremely eloquent. This is a superb collection of Debussy songs. ＜Born in Belgium, she performed at the Théâtre de la Monnaie with Jacobs.
