Limited edition. Flübeck de Burgos became the best-known Spanish conductor of the generation after Ataulfo Argenta (1913-1958), both nationally and internationally, and in 1962, at the age of 25, he became music director of the Orquesta Nacional de España, an ensemble of overwhelming flexibility and proficiency. Throughout the 1960s, the orchestra became known to audiences around the world, and the recordings in this set are one of the first to show this. Raised in Burgos, Spain, and of German descent, he was born into both German and Spanish musical traditions, and his Schumann ("Rhine" Symphony) is impulsive and powerful, while his Mendelssohn ("A Midsummer Night's Dream") is understated and sparkling in every detail. His debut recording for Decca was an LP of Mendelssohn and Bruch concertos with the Romanian violinist Ion Wojcik and the London Symphony Orchestra in February 1965.He also skillfully drew from foreign orchestras to bring out Spanish color, recording Falla's "Love is a Magician" (with soprano Nati Mistral) in 1966 and his own orchestral arrangement of Albéniz's "Spanish Suite" in 1967. He has also collaborated with Narciso Yepes to convey the variety of lesser-known guitar concertos, from the graceful neoclassical Baccalisse's "Guitar Little Concerto" to the more adventurous "Three Graphics" by Maurice Oana. The "Three Graphics" is also known as Flübeck de Burgos' only album for Deutsche Grammophon. With pianist Alicia de Larrocha, he performs concertos by Monsalvache and Srinacci, as well as Falla's "Nights in a Spanish Garden." The 1983 "Night in the Garden of Spain" on this set is unique in that the conductor captures the mood and emotion hidden in the score. And this digitally recorded album is the last recording Flübeck de Burgos made for Decca. The set also includes an album that is being released as a CD for the first time. The booklet includes a new essay by Peter Quantrill on the life and career of Rafael Flübeck de Burgos. Original jacket. (UNIVERSAL MUSIC/IMS)
