Excellent! A powerful compilation that traces the uniquely developed "Zulu Guitar" style in South Africa from SP sources! Without this rescued collection of songs, beautifully restored from rare 78rpm SP recordings, few would have been able to imagine the diverse and beautiful roots of Zulu guitar music that emerged between 1950 and 1965. Borrowing from outlaw figures and skillfully interpreting country & western, Hawaiian, and other styles, this collection documents the storytellers and accomplished musicians who expanded the concept of "Zulu guitar". The 25 songs (18 of which are on analog vinyl) can be seen as an invitation to take us into the abyss of the immigrant experience. The translations of the liner notes offer glimpses of struggle, melancholy, and heartache. They are all colored by the paternalism that bound the apartheid-controlled singers' lives. The echoes of early mbakanga in many of the songs transform the wanderlust of country and western music into an escape wrapped in nostalgia. Something irretrievable is lost, and through the unrequited prophecy of music, various ideas and cultures merge.They were unintentionally cast in the role of anti-heroes, and outwitting the competition for the lover became as important as evading Black Jack (an apartheid-era municipal police officer) and his informant. Given the politically repressive period from which this music emerged, one can only assume that the specificity of the storytelling helped a great deal to escape censure. However, even when the words are lacking, the musical expression suggests a narrative flow. Since most of the master tapes have been intentionally destroyed or lost, the music has been restored from the original shellac recordings using modern restoration techniques. It is also noteworthy that the music has been reproduced with unprecedented clarity. Deluxe 180g gatefold vinyl edition pressed at Pallas Germany. Includes unseen photographs, essay and song translations. Vinyl housed in polylined inner sleeve.
