The fifth ECM release by American trumpeter Ralph Alessi. This album, his first in three years, features a quartet expanded to include a fifth musician and showcases 11 new compositions. These pieces further develop Alessi’s meticulous compositional style with deep reflection and a fresh spirit of adventure. This time, instead of a saxophonist, the group is joined by Alessi’s brother, Joseph Alessi, a trumpeter, who further strengthens this already cutting-edge ensemble with inspired trombone phrases that engage in at times free-spirited interplay with the trumpet. Pianist Matt Mitchell, double bassist John Eberle, and Ches Smith on drums and vibraphone round out the band, racing through Alessi’s syncopated themes as if they were a playground and discovering new ways of expression with each musical development. This diverse program—featuring both patiently unfolding meditative pieces and powerful playing within angular structures—provides ample space for every facet of Ralph Aless’s unique artistry to shine. The online magazine MakingAScene has remarked that “Alessi’s trumpet tone is pure and breathtaking, both in its range and the mood it conveys,” a fact that is vividly demonstrated throughout this album. Pianist Mitchell follows the themes while also playing “outside” the harmony, dancing lightly around the horn section as Ches Smith and Hébert lay down a tense, fluid rhythm.
