Released in 1970, "Third" is Soft Machine's masterpiece and one of the most important and influential progressive rock bands of the late 60's and early 70's. Soft Machine emerged from the British (Canterbury) underground in 1967, playing vigorously in cutting-edge London venues such as the UFO Club and Middle Earth. Emerging from the underground, the band energetically played cutting-edge London venues such as the UFO Club and Middle Earth, and over the next decade built a solid reputation for highly accomplished albums and innovative concert performances. This is their masterpiece, "Third" (analog), released in 1970 as a two-disc set of four songs, and one of the most famous albums in the progressive rock scene. The lineup at that time included Robert Wyatt (drums, vocals), Mike Rutledge (organ), Elton Dean (saxophone), and Hugh Hopper (bass). The sound world developed with members of the Keith Tippett Group is a one-of-a-kind masterpiece that beautifully blends avant-garde pop and intelligent jazz.
