Wagner's last opera "Parsifal" is about the "Holy Grail" that received the ground washed away at the crucifixion of Christ. It is also a major work that consolidated the progress of the opera up to that point and bridged it to the 20th century. This new recording is a live recording of the much-talked-about new production at the Vienna State Opera in 2021. Serebrennikov's production, in which the play is set in a modern Russian prison, is superb, but the cast is even more impressive, with Kaufmann in the title role and a full complement of famous singers. The conductor is Philippe Jordan, General Music Director of the Vienna State Opera. This is Kaufman's second "Parsifal" since the Met's video. The psychological expression of the change from the fool to the savior is exceptionally brilliant. In addition, Galancha's Kundry, Tesier's Anfortas, Zeppenfeldt's Grunemannz, and Koch's Klingzor are literally wonderful in the right places.
