All recordings for Teldec and the former EMI boxThe achievements of the master conductor Kurt Mazur (1927-2015) are defined, among other things, by his relationship with two orchestras with vastly different traditions: the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, which traces its roots to the 15th century, and the Leipzig Symphony Orchestra, where he served for nearly 20 years as Kapellmeister of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra. He was Kapellmeister of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra for almost 20 years. He then became Music Director of the New York Philharmonic. Through all of this, however, his musical integrity remained consistent. The New York Times wrote, "Mazur brought a fervent belief that music is a moral act that can heal the world. 'My goal is meaningful performance... The important thing is to be able to convey to the audience the meaning of the composer/work... When I conduct Beethoven, I do not want to replace him. He should be in your heart, not mine," said Mazur himself.Kurt Mazur is particularly admired for his interpretation of the core repertoire of Australian and German symphonic music, and is particularly closely associated with two major orchestras that represent very contrasting cultures and traditions. He was Kapellmeister from 1970 to 1996 Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra. This period included the fall of the Berlin Wall and the integration of the East German Communist Party into a reunified Germany. the New York Philharmonic, where he served as Music Director from 1991 to 2002. He also had close ties with the London Philharmonic and the Israel Philharmonic, as well as the Orchestre National de France. Kurt Mazur was born in 1927 in Břík, Silesia (now Břík, Poland), and studied piano, composition, and conducting in Leipzig. 1951, he was the first conductor of the Erfurt Staatsoper, and in 1953, the first conductor of the Leipzig Opera. from 1955 to 1958. He became the Assistant Principal Conductor of the Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra, and from 1967 to 1972 he was the Principal Conductor of the same orchestra.In 1970 he became Kapellmeister of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, a post he held until 1996; the two orchestras were the flagship orchestras of East Germany. As such a leader, Mazur was also an influential figure in his country and was able to lead the construction of a new concert hall for the Gewandhaus Orchestra; the previous building, built in the late 19th century, was destroyed by Allied bombs during World War II, and the new hall opened in 1981.
