Busoni (1866-1924)

Description:

Peter Donohoe's unparalleled technique! A collection of piano works by Busoni! Peter Donohoe, a famous British pianist who is highly regarded for his musicality, diversity of style, and overwhelming technique, has recorded works by Ferruccio Busoni (1866-1924), who he says had a great influence on his own development! Although Donohoe has performed Busoni's piano concerto at Proms concerts in the past, his first encounter with Italian piano music was in 1981, when he was commissioned by musicologist John C. G. Waterhouse (1939-1998) to give a recital focusing on 20th century Italian music. Donohoe had been working on a program of recitals focusing on 20th century Italian music, and was introduced to some very valuable works. Donohoe recalls the encounter as "a very important moment in my development," as he had previously known very little about these works. The program Donohoe has chosen includes three works that are the pinnacle of Busoni's virtuosity, and concludes with a J.S. Bach transcription, which he describes as "the most difficult and at the same time the most rewarding work.Peter Donohoe, who had a unique career as a percussionist in his youth, studied piano under Yvonne Loriot and Olivier Messiaen in Paris, and won a prize at the 1981 Leeds International Competition and the highest prize at the 1982 Tchaikovsky International Competition. The booklet (in English, German, and French) includes not only commentaries on the works, but also notes by Donohoe himself, in which he describes Busoni's thoughts and feelings about music ("His natural ability as a pianist was probably comparable to that of Liszt, and his musicological knowledge was boundless," "The history of music in the 20th century is a fascinating one. century music history," "Busoni's contribution to the history of music in the 20th century is immeasurable," and "I feel very enriched by having been exposed to Busoni's works for decades.")
