Young star viola player Timothy Ridout joins the quartet! The Doric Quartet, a British ensemble that won the first prize at the 6th Osaka International Chamber Music Competition and was acclaimed as "one of the finest young string quartets" by Gramophone magazine, has been touted by Chandos as the main artists of the next generation. The quartet has achieved a complete string quartet recording of Mendelssohn, and Volume 1 (CHAN20122) was nominated for "Best of the Year (Chamber Music) 2019" by Australia's Limelight Magazine, while Volume 2 (CHAN20257) was named "December 2021" by Gramophone UK Editor's Choice" and BBC Music Magazine's "January 2022 Chamber Choice". This collection of string quintets, recorded after the string quartets, features the young star viola player Timothy Ridout.No. 1 was composed at the same time Mendelssohn composed the overture to "A Midsummer Night's Dream" (at the age of 17), and was revised and published later. The second piece was composed two years before his death in Frankfurt, Germany, where he was resting.
