Louis Lortie & Edward Gardner! The second complete collection of Saint-Saëns piano concertos! Canada's charismatic pianist, Louis Lortie, is a world-class pianist. Edward Gardner, a young British ally. They have performed together on albums by Poulenc (CHAN 10875) and Shimanowski (CHSA 5115), and have demonstrated an outstanding combination. Following the previous album (CHAN 20031), which included Piano Concertos Nos. 1, 2, and 4, this album also includes Piano Concertos Nos. 3 and 5, completing the complete set of piano concertos. The "No. 3", composed in 1869 and premiered by Saint-Saëns himself for piano solo, caused controversy because of its experimental harmonies; the "No. 4", composed mainly during his stay in Egypt in 1885 and 1886, and completed in 1896, about 20 years after the "No. 4"; and the "No. 5", the last piano concerto, composed in 1897, and premiered by Saint-Saëns in 1898.
