Celebrating his 70th birthday in 2017, John Adams' new work, "Scheherazade 2," is a 50-minute long "dramatic symphony" written for female violinist Leela Josefowitz. John Adams was inspired to write the piece, which has a subtitle reminiscent of works by R. Korsakoff and Berlioz, when he visited the Arab International Institute in Paris and was struck by the world of "Arabian Nights" on display there, especially the story of Scheherazade. She decided to write a book about the Arabian Nights. She believes that it is deeply disturbing that not only in the time of the Arabian Nights, but even today in some countries, women continue to be oppressed, abused, and desecrated, and in this work, Adams wrote, "By depicting Scheherazade, a wise woman who lived in an oppressed world, on a solo violin, I hope to bring to flight the true free spirit of women. The work is a successful attempt to let the original free spirit of the woman take flight. Although there is no clear storyline in the work, the entire piece has provocative imagery, at one point she is tracked down, an intense love scene unfolds, she goes through a religious trial, and ultimately escapes and takes flight to sanctuary.It also has a late Romantic flavor with a grand scale that also shows the influence of Sibelius, Prokofiev, Bartók, and Berg. Leela Josefowitz, who plays the violin solo, is a Jewish-Canadian violinist living in New York. She has performed with numerous orchestras and premiered new works by contemporary composers. Her premiere of Esa-Pekka-Salonen's Violin Concerto was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2014. Warner Music Japan
