Lukas & Arthur Jussen are outstanding Dutch brother and sister pianists, and were seen with innocent smiles on NHK's "Super Piano Lesson" in 2008 under the tutelage of Piris. This "Russian Album" is their seventh album together for Deutsche Grammophon. The works for two pianos by Russian masters Dmitri Shostakovich, Sergei Rachmaninoff, Igor Stravinsky, and Anton Arensky were chosen to capture the essence of Russian music in its character, sound quality, and energy. These works also evoke a tumultuous chapter in Russian history. As Lukas says, "Many Russian music fans are not familiar with the Romanticism of Russian music. Many Russian music fans may find the romantic side of the music the most appealing, but there is always another side. A sense of anxiety and oppression is always present in Shostakovich's work, even when the music itself sounds joyful. And when Rachmaninoff's music emits true beauty, it is filled with a sense of nostalgia. That is the magic of Russian music. The Jussen brothers have had the idea for the "Russian Album" for a long time, but decided to wait until they had enough time to concentrate on this music.And when the concert was canceled due to the corona epidemic, we had the chance to face this music properly.
