Description:
A legendary collection of operas by the "greatest Wagnerian" conductor, including legendary live performances of "Parsifal" at the Bayreuth Festival in 1951 and 1962, studio recordings of "Die Meistersinger von Nuremberg" in Vienna in 1950-51, "Fidelio" in Munich in 1961, and other opera excerpts and highlights recorded for the Universal Music label. Fidelio, and other opera excerpts and highlights from Hans Knappertsbusch's valuable opera collection recorded for labels under the Universal Music umbrella. Included are. To Birgit Nilsson, John Vickers, George London, and Hans Hotter, Knappertsbusch was a Wagnerian of the highest order, and the audience at the Bayreuth Festival in 1951 was captivated not only by the patience of his "Parsifal," but also by the ritualistic, steady unfolding of the work. His recording for Decca was the first complete set of the opera. Perhaps no conductor has conducted "Parsifal" more than Knappertsbusch. In a career spanning more than half a century, he conducted the work more than 200 times. He studied opera at Bayreuth under the tutelage of Hans Richter and Wagner's son, Siegfried, and developed his own interpretation. The 1950-51 studio recording of the complete "Die Meistersinger von Nuremberg" is one of the most heartwarming performances on disc that Knappertsbusch ever left behind. His 1961 recording of "Fidelio" with the Bavarian State Opera features a strong cast, led by Jean Pearce and Sena Jurinacz, and is full of humanism; his 1947 album of Wagner excerpts from Zurich features Maria Reining at the height of her artistic powers and Paul Scheffler's masterful singing. Newly remastered and with a new essay on the conductor's life and career by Peter Quantrill, this set will be essential for both believers and skeptics of Knappertsbusch's often misunderstood talent.
